the untitled series - 2025
For the Untitled series, Angel-Rose Oedit Doebé collaborated with the Beeld & Geluid Foundation to delve into the archives of the former broadcaster OHM (Organisatie Hindoe Media), which highlighted Surinamese-Hindustani and South Asian cultures.
Using television footage from the OHM archives, Oedit Doebé explores whether her appreciation of 1990s and 2000s pop culture, often characterised by a whitewashed perspective, has an equivalent that reflects her own background.
Through her symbolic use of rice, Oedit Doebé pays tribute to her Hindostani ancestors, who cultivated and sold rice to regain their freedom. The resulting works serve as both an homage to her heritage and a process of decolonisation. Each untitled image evokes the countless unnamed identities that have long remained unseen.

By integrating western and Indian pop culture, camp aesthetics and references to colonial history, Oedit Doebé reflects on decolonisation and marginalisation. Her work interrogates how western pop culture is shaped by colonisation, resulting in stereotypes and whitewashing. By assembling imagery from western and Indian pop culture, she challenges these stereotypes.
